Prayer Team

The Power of Prayer - and the Prayer Team

People of all faiths and cultures pray: even people with no faith sometimes find they are drawn to reach out to some bigger spirituality than themselves. Whilst this may be in a sense of gratitude for something wonderful, the need to go beyond oneself seems stronger in times of trouble and distress. It is then that one cries out to God for help; but if talking to God is not a familiar or regular practice then it may be an uncomfortable experience tinged with doubt. Christians believe, however, that God, the Father, wants us to flourish and wants us to come to him - with the simplicity and trust of a child - to lay before him our yearnings and our restlessness about all that is not as it should be.

God does answer prayers although not necessarily directly or in the way one might expect, but he can only help if he is asked. Sometimes the need for prayer is urgent: it is also the case that more people praying for help for a person may be more effective. With this in mind members from our group of churches are forming a Prayer Team.

The Prayer Team will provide a rapid response to those in urgent need of prayer on their behalf, or for a relative or a friend. The reasons for seeking urgent prayer are many but will include bereavement, illness - physical and mental, family difficulties, work problems etc. A dedicated telephone number is available to access the Prayer Team and to make the request in absolute confidence. The caller may give their name if they choose but it is not necessary; it will suffice just to state for whom or for what the prayer is required. Again it is not necessary for the caller to give the name of that person for God will know for whom the prayers are required. Callers should be reassured that all members of the Team will pray on their behalf.

In addition to the Prayer Team, a ‘Prayer Corner’ now exists in St. Andrew’s Church, Bulmer to act as a focal point for prayer. Apart from being a conduit for talking to God, it will act as a depository for written prayers and prayer requests to be left by visitors. These prayers or requests, as well as calls to God for help, may also include praise and thanksgiving for God’s good works. Additionally, there will be a short explanation of the Prayer Team together with the relevant contact telephone number.

The Prayer Team can be reached on 01787 278761 and all calls will be dealt with confidentially.
